‘The Unmaking of Ellie Rook’ by Sandra Ireland

This novel is set in a rugged landscape, the place of legend where ancient Queen Finella pushed a tyrant King to his death. In modern times, Ellie has escaped the grim scrapyard where she grew up. Halfway across the world, teaching in Asia, she receives a phone call that pulls her home. There’s been an accident at the local waterfall, her mother is missing, presumed dead. Ellie’s return forces her to face some home truths and confront her past. Ireland weaves a cast of characters that are raw and edgy but believable in this harsh environment. The narrative rolls along like a rumbling storm despite a smattering of flashbacks to explain past events. A grim family tale for a rainy day.
