I have read a lot of novels set in World War II but, I have to confess, I knew nothing about the German occupation of Greece, the civil war that followed and the subsequent military dictatorship. This story begins in modern day Greece and then drifts back decades to Athens, 1941 where 15 year old Themis in the middle of a family that’s deeply divided by left and right wing politics. When the Germans invade they cause famine, tragedy and a brutal fight for survival. Victoria Hislop takes you on a thrilling journey through the eyes of a young, brave heroine. A brilliant story.
