‘The House by the Sea’ by Louise Douglas

When Anna DeLuca dies, her estranged daughter-in-law Edie is relieved. She blames Anna for the accident that destroyed her family. Now, lured to Sicily and Villa della Madonna del Mare, she fears Anna may be interfering from beyond the grave, reuniting Edie with her ex-husband Joe. The house holds many secrets, each one raises questions about the past. Will Edie be able to lay the old ghosts to rest before she can move on with Joe?

Louise Douglas has written a chilling tale of jealousy and betrayal against a wonderful Sicilian backdrop, wonderful escapism for this time of year. There are a few unexpected twists but it’s not too demanding.

Edie is a problematic character, I wasn’t too sure if I liked her at first, but I felt compelled to read on and find out how it all ended.
